Taking your horse on holiday
The gentle
hills and wide-open landscapes of Wales are synonymous with the freedom
of horse riding and pony trekking and there are fewer places in the
British isles that offer such variety, from the mountains of Snowdonia
to the scenic coastal trails of Pembrokeshire.
If you're
lucky enough to have your own horse, you're sure to want to enjoy the
great outdoors together and there's plenty of accommodation on offer
across Wales, much of which is owned by specialists catering exclusively
for riding holidays and short breaks with horses. These include luxury
farmhouses, cottages with paddocks and charming barn conversions, all of
which offer comfortable stables and plenty of parking for horse boxes
and trailers. If you plan and research your trip well, you're sure to
find the perfect place to relax and unwind after a long day in the
saddle.
Nestling in the heart of the Severn Valley mid-way between southern
Snowdonia and the Brecon Beacons, Newtown is the ideal base for
exploring this beautiful part of the country. The largest county in
Wales, Powys offers some of the best riding country in the UK. Saddle-up
and head out to explore the Welsh Marches, the area straddling the Welsh
mountains and the river valleys of the English border. An area steeped
in history, dotted with the ruins of Dolforwyn and Montgomery Castles,
you'll enjoy gentle wooded river valleys and great swathes of moorland,
where you can follow the routes once covered by packhorses as they
shepherded their flocks of sheep to the markets of the border towns. To
the south, you'll uncover the beauty of the black mountains and the
Brecon Beacons National Park, where pony trekking began. Alternatively,
head to the north and seize the chance to ride the Rainbow routes,
breathtaking trails that will take you deep into the Dyfnant and Vyrnwy
forests offering spectacular views of coniferous woodland and lakes.
Created in conjunction with the Forestry Commission, these routes are
the best way to enjoy the freedom of mid-Wales` remote moorland and
leafy bridle paths and you'll find plenty of picnic tables with tying-up
spots when it's time to relax and enjoy some al-fresco refreshments.
Straddling the River Severn, Newtown itself maintains all the charm of a
traditional Welsh market town, with gentle family-friendly river walks
and pretty timber-framed houses. Historically, the town played an key
role in the Welsh woollen industry and was an important centre for
handloom weaving. Today Newtown`s visitors can enjoy theatres, museums
and art galleries as well as modern shopping arcades, restaurants and
plenty of traditional olde worlde pubs. A number of events held through
the summer months include the Carnival, the Food Festival and the Motor
Show. If you don't want to limit yourself to horse-riding while you're
here, there are plenty more activities on offer in the local area. Enjoy
a round of golf at St Giles and St Idloes golf clubs, or for something
completely different, head to Mid-Wales shooting centre, where even
complete novices can try their hand at clay target shooting against the
stunning backdrop of the Trannon Valley. Mid-Wales is renowned for its
superb fishing and just 15 miles west at Llyn Clywedog, you'll also be
able to fish for top quality trout in one of the most beautiful lakes in
Wales.
Whilst you`re holidaying in Wales, it`s definitely worth a trip down to
Chepstow, home of the Welsh National, for a memorable day out at the
races, whether it`s for a regular meeting, a family funday or a special
event. However you decide to place your bets, you`ll be grateful for a
