Here at Highgate we’ve made our first ever Christmas wreaths! As complete novices we were slightly apprehensive but, after superb tutorage at a Gregynog Christmas Decoration Day, several arrangements have been produced – all of which feature foliage from Gregynog itself. Gregynog is considering holding more arts and crafts days in the future by popular demand.
Arts and crafts in Mid Wales abounds, with small independent makers and producers working in every town and pretty much every village. In fact, the creative industries is one of the fastest growing sectors in Wales, employing almost 50,000 people. In Montgomeryshire in particular we have fine examples of architecture, design, crafts, film making, photography, museums, galleries, libraries, music, performing and the visual arts.
An extraordinary example of the latter is the wonderful Mid Wales Arts Centre based just a few miles away in Caersws. Run by the charming Cathy Knapp, the Centre features a large Gallery, Sculpture Park and café serving home-cooked food. Cathy’s late husband, the internationally renowned enamellist and sculptor Stefan Knapp, left a unique collection of paintings and sculpture which are on display in the house and grounds. Her son Ivan Knapp also has a studio, with work on display. There are regular exhibitions and workshops, plus courses run by professional artists take place in a supportive and friendly environment.
Maesmawr, the main house at Mid Wales Arts Centre, dates back to 1526 and was originally a Welsh longhouse that grew into a successful farm. Much of the original structure remains and in 1820 the imposing Georgian front was added. This area of Mid Wales has fostered a wealth of artists, who have been able to find the space they need at Maesmawr for their work and have recognised the magical beauty of the area.
Here at Highgate, we’ll continue to be ‘crafty’ and develop our skills in order to produce some even better wreaths and decorations next year. For those however who’d like to see arts and crafts produced by the experts, a visit to Mid Wales Arts Centre is strongly recommended! Please visit www.midwalesarts.org.uk for more information.
